Artificial light may be considered to be a statutory nuisance.
Because Statutory Nuisance could apply to such a wide range of situations, responses are prioritised on the type of nuisance concerned. Some minor matters may not be routinely investigated, and investigations may only take place if levels of other higher priority work permit and the problem is serious and persistent.
This is currently the case with light nuisance complaints, and these will not be routinely investigated. Members of the public should follow the standard advice which usually resolves matters:
- Discuss the issue with the owner of the light(s) directly - it may be possible to redirect the light, add a cowl or shade, adjust the times of the light or reduce the sensitivity of any motion sensors.
- Add thick curtain or shades, preferably blackout, to the affected room.
